Discover!
At the Walter Elwood Museum

The Walter Elwood Museum, in Amsterdam, NY, has a diverse collection acquired by its founder, educator Walter Elwood and expanded on by contributions from the Amsterdam community. Local history artifacts, Native American materials, natural history specimens and materials from around the world are all a part of the museum's collection.

In Discover! Visitors are introduced to the ways in which the museum -- and the world around them -- encourages each of us to observe, explore and participate. From buttons and birds eggs, to shoes and tintypes, the museum's rich and diverse collections take center stage. Hands-on stations engage multiple intelligences in drawing, puzzle solving, matching and writing activities while two simple media installations highlight early 20th century teaching slides and Walter Elwood's own slides of his extensive travels.

Families and school groups have already made the exhibit a favorite. The exhibit was supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the New York State Council on the Arts.
