Telling Sayre's Stories
The Sayre Historical Society, an all-volunteer organization in Sayre, PA, has worked for close to a decade to restore the historic Lehigh Valley Railroad station as a community museum. In December, 2007, their dreams became a reality with the opening of the first phase of exhibitions, Telling Sayre's Stories. In this exhibit, historic photographs, objects, archival materials and oral histories combine to share the story of Sayre's community life, from the development of the Robert Packer Hospital and Guthrie Clinic to the churches, schools and sports teams that form the fabric of community life. The design of the exhibit complements the historic building's interior -- and provides views of the railroad tracks -- still an important part of life in Sayre.
The second phase of exhibitions -- on the major role that the Lehigh Valley Railroad played in the development of Sayre -- will open in late 2008. The rich, diverse railroad collections at the historical society will be presented for the first time.
